Multi-factor authentication (MFA) has been enabled in Canvas and is required to access the CGI Canvas instance. You will be prompted to set up MFA the first time you attempt to log in to Canvas.
You will be unable to log in to Canvas until you have configured multi-factor authentication for your Canvas account.
You will need your phone to configure multi-factor authentication.
You can choose to verify your account in one of two ways: either via Text Message [A] or Authenticator App [B].The information for both is on the same screen, so it can be confusing. You only need to choose one method.
Note: those living outside the US may not be able to use the option for Text Message.
A. Via text message.
-- Enter your mobile phone number.
-- Select your phone service carrier from the dropdown menu.
-- Select Send.
-- A code will be texted to you. Copy the code. Enter it into the Verification Code box [C] and select Verify.
-- Check the box for Remember this computer[D]. This will lessen the number of times you are asked for a code via your preferred method.
B. Via an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator.
If you have never used Google Authenticator, you will need to download and install the app from the appropriate app store for your device (Apple | Google Play | Chrome extension)
To use Google Authenticator, open the app on your phone and scan the QR code.
--To do so, look for a plus symbol + in the app. This can be in the menu at the top of the screen or is often in the bottom right corner.
-- Select Scan QR code. Follow instructions in the app to complete the process.
-- Copy the verification code. Enter it into the Verification Code box [C] and select Verify.
-- Check the box for Remember this computer[D]. This will lessen the number of times you are asked for a code via your preferred method.
After Set-Up
After you have successfully set up MFA, you may be asked to verify from time to time, using the method you have selected (text or Google Authenticator). When this happens, you will see a prompt like the following:
Managing Multi-Factor Authentication
Once you have enabled MFA, additional options may appear in your Account Settings.
[1] If you wish to switch types of verification (such as you want to use text messages instead of the Google authenticator app), you can do so from the Reconfigure Multi-Factor Authentication button.
[2] Until December 18, you can disable MFA.
[3] We highly recommend you print off a set of Backup Codes and keep them in a safe place. If ever you do not have access to your phone or your chosen method isn't working, you can use one of your backup codes.
