Q: I am getting an HTTP Handler error when I try to log in to the library. Help!
A: An HTTP Handler error typically signals an interference by a cookie or saved password in your browser settings or on your computer.
You may see these errors if you use your CGI Google account to enter the library. This is the "Sign In with Google" option.
The reason you might see these errors would be if you had recently changed your Google password. If the cookie on your computer or an autofilled, saved password for your Google account uses the OLD password, you will encounter this error.
How You Can Determine Whether It's an Old Password Causing Mischief
Try logging in using a browser or device that you do not normally use when accessing the library, so there is no saved password to interfere. For example, if you normally use Chrome, try Firefox. If you normally use Safari, give Chrome a try. Or, if you normally log in to the library on a Chrome browser on your computer, try your iPad.
What you're attempting to do is to see if you can access the library in another way. If you can, that is a sign that it is something on your local device or in your browser that is causing the error.
If you cannot access it on any other browser or device, this could signal that you have incorrect saved passwords in many places, or it could signal that there's an issue with your library account in general.
If You Can Get Into the Library on Another Device or In Another Browser
Your next steps are to clear out any saved passwords in the browser and computer where you are experiencing the error.
- Clear your browsing history, cookies, and cached images/files for all time.
- Check to see if there are any autofilled passwords that may exist for EBSCO. You may have to check several locations.
- Check in your browser's settings
- If you keep passwords on your computer (such as in a browser extension like iCloud or Raindrop,) you may need to delete those.
- If you keep passwords in a password manager (like LastPass or Keeper Security), you may need to delete those.
- Restart your machine!
If you use multiple browsers or applications to save passwords, be sure to check and clear all of them.
