This document provides an overview for how to use Honorlock in the Canvas learning environment, including installation instructions.
Honorlock is an automated proctoring solution that helps instructors foster academic integrity when providing remote assessments to students. Honorlock is designed for assessments built in the Canvas learning management system (LMS), particularly in Canvas Quizzes.
CGI uses Honorlock to facilitate identity verification and to proctor designated content exams, such as a midterm or final exam in a course.
Using Honorlock in the Canvas Learning Environment
- Honorlock only works when using a Chrome browser on Windows or macOS desktop computer platforms. Exams cannot be proctored with Honorlock on a phone or tablet.
- Students must install a Chrome extension to complete an Honorlock proctored assessment.
- To install the Chrome extension, visit honorlock.com/install. The first time you take an exam with Honorlock, you may also be prompted to install it before you begin the exam.
- IMPORTANT: If you still have the Proctorio extension installed, Honorlock will not be enabled. Be sure to delete the Proctorio Chrome extension.
Taking an Exam
- You will need a government issued ID in English or a student ID with photo for both identity verification and remotely proctored course exams.
- A practice exam will usually be made available to you. This exam has between 3 - 5 questions and does not count towards a grade. Its purpose is to check your system settings to ensure your real exam goes smoothly.

The Most Common Issue with Honorlock ...
...is that you may get asked for a passcode.
Honorlock does not require a passcode. This is Honorlock's way of signalling that something is wrong with your set-up.
If you're being asked to enter a passcode the likeliest reason is that you either a) haven't successfully installed the Honorlock Chrome extension or b) you're not testing with Google Chrome as your web-browser.
If you're certain you've downloaded the Honorlock Extension and you're still being asked for a password, make sure the Honorlock extension is activated. You can do this by clicking the "Puzzle Piece" icon found in the upper right-hand corner of your Chrome browser. When you click the "Puzzle Piece" icon, next click "Manage Extensions". You'll know Honorlock is active if the slider bar is blue. PLEASE NOTE - if you've taken other remotely proctored exams using services like Proctorio or ProctorU, you will need to "deactivate" those extensions so that Honorlock is the only remote proctoring extension that's active.
